Western debates about AI often present themselves as universal while reflecting distinctly Western anxieties about authorship, individuality and cultural identity. Elsewhere, the technology is frequently approached less as an existential threat than as a practical instrument of access, productivity and mobility.

The global conversation around artificial intelligence has a curious quality: it presents itself as universal while remaining deeply provincial.
We speak about AI as though “we” means humanity at large, when much of the anxiety, moral hesitation and cultural resistance comes from a far more specific constituency: educated, middle- and upper-middle-class Western societies, disproportionately European ones. This is less a moral accusation than a structural observation - and perhaps a self-observation.
AI adoption is accelerating around the world, but the tone of the discussion changes dramatically depending on where one looks. Across many developing and emerging economies, the technology is approached pragmatically: as a tool, a multiplier, a way to compress time, cross language barriers and compensate for unreliable institutions. In much of the West, it is framed as a threat to authenticity, creativity, dignity, individuality and meaning itself. These conversations rarely meet.
Spend enough time on LinkedIn, YouTube, in academic circles or creative communities, and a familiar narrative begins to feel like consensus: AI produces “slop”, lacks soul, flattens originality, averages human expression and erodes whatever remains uniquely ours.
The frequency of these criticisms creates the impression of a worldwide revolt. It is, in part, a visibility illusion. The people most likely to publish, comment, theorise and moralise about AI are often those least dependent on its immediate utility. Those who can afford to hesitate have considerable influence over the tone of the debate.
Elsewhere, the conversation is often less theatrical. Students, freelancers, entrepreneurs and small businesses use AI because it helps them get work done. Language barriers become less restrictive, previously expensive expertise becomes easier to access and a person with limited institutional support can suddenly produce, research or communicate at a level that would once have required an entire team.
For many users, AI is thus not primarily an existential threat, but a rare opportunity to compete within systems that have historically excluded them.
Several distinct questions are regularly collapsed into one emotional response.
There is the practical question: does AI allow people to do something faster, more cheaply, more effectively, or at all?
There are questions of governance: who controls these systems, which values do they encode and what limits should be imposed upon them?
There is the environmental question, involving energy use, water consumption and the infrastructure required to sustain large-scale computation.
Then there is the question that dominates much of the Western cultural debate: what happens to authorship, originality, creativity and the idea of a recognisable human spark?
In many parts of the world, utility comes first. In the West, and particularly in Europe, the latter questions occupy far more intellectual space. The anxiety is economic, certainly, but it is also philosophical.
Cultures that place less emphasis on individual authorship may experience less existential discomfort when new tools blur its boundaries. Where stability and opportunity carry greater immediate weight, symbolic purity can appear less urgent. Europe approaches the same technology carrying a much heavier cultural inheritance.
European culture has developed an unusually intense relationship with interiority, authorship and the belief that meaning emerges from individual depth.
From Plato and Christianity through the Enlightenment and Romanticism, the Western self became more than a worker, subject or citizen. It became a moral and creative project. Originality acquired an ethical dimension. To be average was no longer merely to be unremarkable. It suggested a failure to become fully oneself. AI touches that inheritance directly.
Large language models expose something uncomfortable: much of what we experience as original, authentic or profound is also patterned, inherited and socially reinforced. The shock is not simply that AI can produce average work. It is that a significant amount of human work may already have been closer to the average than we cared to admit.
This helps explain why criticism so often becomes moralised. The dispute concerns quality, but it also concerns identity. AI threatens a Western image of the self as sovereign, singular and difficult to reproduce.
AI is frequently described as a new space race. The metaphor is seductive because it offers clear protagonists, national rivalry and the possibility of victory. It is also misleading.
The space race was largely symbolic. Landing on the Moon demonstrated technological superiority, but it did not immediately transform the everyday life of the average citizen. Artificial intelligence is almost the reverse.
A model that ranks second on a benchmark may still alter labour markets, education, creativity and cognition. A system does not need to be the most advanced in the world to become economically consequential. Adoption matters more than ceremonial victory. Distribution matters more than primacy.
There is also no finish line after which everyone else stops. China will not abandon AI development because a Western laboratory reaches a particular milestone first. Emerging economies will not suspend adoption out of ideological deference. The technology will continue to propagate wherever it proves useful.
Rockets converged because every nation faced the same physical laws. AI systems may converge because their users share many of the same cognitive and economic needs.
Artificial intelligence weakens a long-standing Western advantage: temporal distance. Historically, innovations emerged in wealthy countries and travelled outward slowly. Geography, capital, language and institutional access created long delays between invention and diffusion. Those delays offered a form of protection. The latest tools, methods and knowledge remained concentrated in a relatively small number of places. That distance is now shrinking rapidly.
When advanced tools are globally accessible, the quality of output can converge far more quickly than wages. A designer, analyst, translator or animator in a lower-cost country can produce work comparable to that of someone based in London, Berlin or New York, while charging considerably less.
This does not automatically mean the West is doomed, but that location, credentials and institutional proximity may provide less protection than they once did. Competitive advantage shifts towards speed, judgement, adaptability and the ability to integrate new tools effectively. Western discomfort with this change is understandable, but discomfort alone offers little strategic protection.
Other regions of our planet appear constantly in Western discussions about AI, yet rarely as societies undergoing their own transformations.
China is treated primarily as an ideological and technological opponent. Its systems matter insofar as they threaten Western leadership, complicate narratives about censorship and ethics, or force Western companies and governments to accelerate. The dominant questions concern whether “we” are ahead, freer or more aligned with liberal values.
Far less attention is paid to how AI may be changing Chinese education, labour, administration or ordinary cognition. China becomes a benchmark and a provocation rather than a parallel human experiment.
The Middle East is framed differently, though often just as reductively. It appears as capital, infrastructure and geography: a place to finance models, build data centres and provide the energy required for large-scale computation. Its relevance lies in investment capacity and strategic positioning, while cultural adoption and social change remain secondary.
In both cases, entire societies disappear behind their usefulness to Western narratives. China becomes competitive pressure. The Middle East becomes financial and infrastructural leverage.
The underlying transformation is much broader. Similar tools are entering radically different social environments, altering productivity, communication and coordination in ways that cannot be reduced to a single geopolitical contest. Yet the Western debate remains strikingly self-referential. AI becomes yet another surface onto which Western anxieties about power, identity and morality are projected and universalised.
Western hesitation is not solely ethical or environmental. It is also ideological. Western cultures place extraordinary value on autonomy, originality and the sovereignty of the individual mind. AI appears corrosive to all three. This can produce a peculiar form of self-handicapping: a moral overinvestment in restraint while others concentrate on use.
Ethics remain necessary, but they cannot replace participation. Tools improve through adoption, feedback and experimentation. Values exert little influence over systems their supposed defenders refuse to engage with. Abstention may preserve a feeling of purity, but it also forfeits leverage.
There is also an irony here. Anyone who believes Western commitments to transparency, pluralism and open expression are worth preserving should have an interest in shaping AI systems through intensive use, criticism and development. Withdrawal does not prevent the technology from advancing. It merely reduces one’s influence over the direction it takes.
None of this means that AI is neutral, benevolent or inevitable in its current form. The familiar Western framing of “AI versus humanity,” however, obscures more than it reveals.
AI presents problems of coordination, distribution, power and identity. Treating it primarily as a referendum on soul and originality may be emotionally satisfying, but it leaves many of the material dynamics untouched.
The world is not waiting for philosophical closure before adopting these systems. A more useful question is therefore not whether AI threatens what we were. It is whether we can articulate what matters after the tools have arrived, without pretending that they can simply be uninvented.
There is another irony beneath Western anxiety about artificial intelligence. If any societies had reason to fear AI as an instrument of cultural displacement, one might expect them to be outside the West.
Contemporary systems are deeply shaped by Western languages, academic traditions, media, legal reasoning and liberal assumptions about speech, agency and rationality. Even the aspiration towards neutral, procedural and context-independent reasoning carries a recognisably Western genealogy.
AI is therefore not an alien intelligence arriving from beyond Western culture, however fond American popular culture may be of that scenario. To a considerable extent, it is a mirror the West constructed from its own archives.
Yet Western societies often express the greatest existential unease about what appears within it. That fear is not primarily that AI will replace Western culture with something foreign, but may be that AI exposes something uncomfortable about Western culture itself.
It reproduces Western reasoning without the romance of authorship. It imitates Western creativity without the mythology of genius. It reflects Western rationality without the moral drama of individual struggle. In doing so, it unsettles a deeply rooted belief: that meaning arises from singular interior depth rather than from pattern, accumulation and inheritance.
The West created a technology aligned with many of its own intellectual habits, then recoiled when those habits became explicit, scalable and impersonal. What appears as cultural destruction may partly be cultural self-recognition. Ultimately, artificial intelligence brings two Western inheritances into direct conflict: the desire to construct universal systems and the worship of individual exception.
Perhaps the deeper discomfort comes from encountering our own abstractions at scale, stripped of scarcity, narrative and mystique. In that sense, AI may resemble the light beyond Plato’s cave - and the revealing part is how readily we insist that the shadows felt more authentic.
